Was founded In 1991 by Ms. Nyota Starr Koya. It is currently located inside the Adeline Street Work Live Artist Lofts Converted from an existing industrial building in West Oakland, CA. this was Oakland's first African American neighborhood. Its situated in the northwestern corner along the waterfront between San Francisco and Oakland Bay Bridge. The salon is one of the premier salons established to specialize in curly, kinky, wavey, coily, bi-racial, and multi-textured hair care. Using the absolute best hand made product line on the planet, "Hair Skin Vittles Gourmet Products LLC". Just imagine a custom cut, color, style, or loc grooming service fit for a king and queen, Then expect to receive it here.

This re-emerging neighborhood in which the salon is located, currently has a population of 21,812 and is over 67% African-American. By 1960 this neighborhood had been decimated by unemployment and capitalist government policy through urban redevelopment. Despite these facts, It has survived many ups and downs . The building of the Nimitz Freeway, built in the 1950's above Cypress Street, effectively split the neighborhood in half and isolated it from downtown Oakland. A long hard fight was fought to rebuild it in a new location after the disaster of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake left West Oakland severely damaged

Between 1966 and 1968, 12 blocks of well kept family homes where razed and thousands of residents were displaced to build the massive Oakland Main Post Office, the West Oakland BART Station, and the Acorn Plaza housing project. These construction projects coincided with a period of economic decline characterized by unemployment, poverty, and urban blight. It was during these times that West Oakland was forced to became primarily an African American neighborhood.

In 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake left West Oakland severely damaged yet the story of this ethnically diverse neighborhood still boasts the history of, Jack London who lived and wrote his novel "Valley of the Moor" set in West Oakland. African American porters were employed through the Pullman Palace Car Company.Their union The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, was at 5th and Wood Street. Seventh Street was lined with jazz and blues clubs. Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association had its West Coast headquarters at 8th and Chester Streets. The Black Panthers in the late 1960's main office was on Peralta Street, where they distributed free breakfasts to children in St. Augustine's church on West Street and De Fremery Park was known as Bobby Hutton Park.
