The building of the Nimitz Freeway, built in the 1950's above Cypress Street, effectively split the neighborhood in half and isolated it from downtown Oakland. Between 1966 and 1968, 12 blocks of well kept family homes where razed and thousands of residents were displaced to build the massive Oakland Main Post Office, the West Oakland BART Station, and the Acorn Plaza housing project. These construction projects coincided with a period of economic decline characterized by unemployment, poverty, and urban blight. It was during these times that West Oakland was forced to became primarily an African American neighborhood.
In 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake left West Oakland severely damaged yet the story of this ethnically diverse neighborhood still boasts the history of, Jack London who lived and wrote his novel "Valley of the Moor" set in West Oakland. African American porters were employed through the Pullman Palace Car Company.Their union The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, was at 5th and Wood Street. Seventh Street was lined with jazz and blues clubs.
